A week with Pete January 7th – 14th 2021

I reached out to Pete Hoyle early this winter in hopes of planning a base camp in the Caribou Range. Pete who recently passed his full ski guide exam with the ACMG also had an interest in this. But, with an arctic front creating incredibly cold temps we chose to change our plans. We headed to Nelson BC and set up camp in a rad little cabin and began day tripping.

Neither Pete nor I had skied around the Kokanee Glacier. We spent two days skiing using the road up to Gibson Lake for access. The skiing was good but the cold temps and unstable snow had us keeping things conservative.

When we weren’t skiing, we took the snowmobiles out. We mainly went near Morning Mountain close to Nelson and Lemon Creek up the Slocan. We are both rookie sledders, but Pete took to it incredibly quickly.

On our last day we ended up getting some local beta and had the best skiing of the trip. A north-facing shoot and a beautiful tree run back to the sled.
